Can international students work in Canada?
With a valid study permit, most full-time students at an eligible institution can work on campus, and work off campus during their studies. Off-campus work is capped at a set number of hours per week during academic sessions, and you can usually work full time during scheduled breaks such as summer and winter holidays.
The weekly off-campus hour limit has changed in recent years (most recently up to 24 hours per week). Because these rules change, always confirm the current limit and your eligibility on the official IRCC website before you start working. Going over your allowed hours can affect your status.
Types of work for international students
On-campus jobs
Roles at your school (library, cafeteria, research, admin) if you meet the conditions on your permit.
Off-campus jobs
Regular jobs off campus, within the weekly hour limit during terms and full time on breaks.
Co-op / internship
If work experience is part of your program, you usually need a separate co-op work permit.
Post-graduation (PGWP)
After you graduate from an eligible program, a Post-Graduation Work Permit can let you work full time.
