How to Write a Canadian Resume as a Newcomer

A well-crafted resume is your first impression with Canadian employers. This guide covers the Canadian resume format, what to include, and how to present your international experience effectively.

The Canadian Resume Format

Canadian resumes differ from CVs used in many other countries. Here are the key formatting standards that Canadian employers expect.

  • Length: 1-2 pages maximum. New graduates should aim for one page; experienced professionals can use two.
  • No photo: Canadian resumes never include a headshot or personal photo.
  • No personal details: Do not include your age, date of birth, marital status, gender, nationality, or religion.
  • Font: Clean, professional fonts like Calibri, Arial, or Garamond in 10-12pt size.
  • File format: Submit as PDF unless otherwise specified to preserve formatting.

What to Include

Contact Information

Include your full name, phone number, email address, city and province (full address is not necessary), and LinkedIn profile URL if you have one.

Professional Summary

A 2-3 sentence summary at the top of your resume highlighting your key qualifications, years of experience, and what you bring to the role. Tailor this to each job application.

Work Experience

List your work history in reverse chronological order (most recent first). For each position, include:

  • Job title, company name, and location (city, country)
  • Dates of employment (month and year)
  • 3-5 bullet points describing your accomplishments using action verbs and quantifiable results

Education

List your degrees, diplomas, and certifications in reverse chronological order. Include the institution name, location, degree or credential earned, and year of completion. If you have a credential assessment (e.g., from WES), mention it.

Skills

List relevant technical and soft skills. Include languages spoken, software proficiencies, certifications, and any industry-specific competencies.

Tips for Presenting International Experience

Translate job titles to Canadian equivalents

If your job title does not directly translate, use a commonly understood Canadian equivalent. For example, "Senior Accounts Officer" could become "Senior Accountant" or "Financial Analyst."

Provide context for international employers

Canadian recruiters may not recognize foreign companies. Add a brief description: "ABC Corp (a leading telecommunications company with 5,000+ employees)."

Highlight transferable skills

Focus on skills that apply across borders: project management, leadership, communication, problem-solving, and technical expertise. Quantify results whenever possible.

Include Canadian experience

Even if you only have volunteer work, internships, or bridging program experience, include it. Canadian employers value local experience of any kind.

Use Canadian English spelling

Use Canadian/British spelling conventions: "colour" not "color," "centre" not "center," "analyse" not "analyze."

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Including a photo or personal details — age, marital status, nationality, or religion have no place on a Canadian resume.
  • Using a generic resume for every job — tailor your resume for each application by matching keywords from the job description.
  • Listing duties instead of accomplishments — "Managed a team of 12" is less impactful than "Led a team of 12 to achieve 30% revenue growth in one year."
  • Writing "References available upon request" — this is outdated and unnecessary. Employers will ask for references when they need them.
  • Spelling and grammar errors — have a native English speaker review your resume, or use tools like Grammarly to catch mistakes.
  • Making it longer than two pages — Canadian employers prefer concise resumes. Cut anything older than 10-15 years unless highly relevant.
  • Using an unprofessional email address — create a simple email like firstname.lastname@gmail.com.
